Description

Mallow is a part of the diverse family of malvaceae plants. Some other members of that family are cotton, hibiscus, and okra. Mainly known as common mallow, it is also referred to as cheese plant, high mallow and tall mallow. The flower has fruits that are cheese-like in shape, and this earned it its nickname, cheese plant. Common mallow has pale mauve, funnel-like flowers with five open petals and deep purple stripes. Its leaves have five lobes and its stalks have hairs on them. One of the major areas which Malva Sylvestris grow is north east and central of Iran, but also in North Africa and the Mediterranean.

Certain parts of Common mallow are edible (leaves, flowers and seeds) and there is evidence that the Romans may have deliberately cultivated the plant to be used for food and medicine.

Uses of Mallow Flower Blue Whole

The leaves and flower buds contain mucus, tannins, flavonoids, essential oil, vitamin C and other substances. The anthocyanin glycoside malvin, a naturally occurring chemical, is only found in the flowers. Malva sylvestris is used traditionally as an herbal remedy for asthma, bronchitis, coughing, throat infections and emphysema.

The dried flowers are of a deep purple/blue colour and are often used for decorations, in confetti and potpourri.
