History and background

A member of the same plant family as cardamom and turmeric, ginger has a long and fascinating history of both culinary and medicinal use. Its current name is derived from the Middle English word ‘gingivere’, but it wasn’t called this from the get-go; its history can be traced back more than 3,000 years to the Sanskrit term ‘srngaveram’, which means ‘horn root.’

Nobody knows for sure where this spice originated, as it doesn’t grow in the wild. However, it’s thought that the plant was produced originally by either the Indians or the Chinese, who have used it medicinally for more than 5,000 years.

It made its way to Europe more than 2,000 years ago, thanks to the Romans, who sought it out for its medicinal properties – although it has been used in cooking for thousands of years too.

How to use ginger powder

Being native to South East Asia, India and China, ginger is an integral component of the region’s diet and is valued for its aromatic, culinary and potential medicinal properties. Although we may be more familiar with recipe favourites like cake and biscuits, this sweet spice is more than just a flavouring; it’s been used for its medicinal properties throughout the ages.

It’s thought to help boost the effectiveness of our immune systems and may even help reduce stress levels. A natural anti-inflammatory, this spice is believed to offer relief for gastrointestinal ailments and is often used to help with detoxification.

Ginger has a very long history of use in various forms of traditional and alternative medicine. It is a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It is often used in teas to reduce cold and flu symptoms, and is also used to reduce symptoms of morning sickness and menstrual pain. Other claims include that it aids weight loss, helps with osteoarthritis, and decreases blood sugar levels, cholesterol and heart risk conditions. Some even claim it reduces the risk of certain cancers.

Ginger is used as a flavour in many non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks, including beer, gin, and gin liqueurs.
