Uses of our Dried Roots

There’s an abundance of applications for dried roots across health and beauty, cuisine, animal supplements, brewing and distilling.

Whether you’re serious about maximising the flavour of your cooking or want to take full advantage of the health benefits that many herbs and spices offer, purchasing dried roots is the perfect way to get what you’re looking for.

Chicory root

The naturally caffeine-free alternative to coffee, chicory root (Cichorium intybus) embodies a rich and slightly bitter flavour that perfectly emulates the taste of coffee. It’s also becoming a popular way to reduce caffeine consumption through blended grounds of chicory and coffee. This nutritious root is believed to provide benefits for the gut and support regular bowel movements. That’s in part thanks to it being a prebiotic fibre. However, to tap into these potential benefits, the root needs to be consumed rather than strained into a coffee. This root is often found in foods as an additive, with the extracted inulin offering a sweet flavour.

Dandelion root

Packed with minerals and vitamins, including A, B, C, and D, this Dandelion root (Taraxacum officinalis) is yet another coffee substitute. Less acidic than coffee, the roots can be ground and roasted. It’s believed by the herbalist community that dandelion root offers detoxifying benefits for the liver and gallbladder.

Angelica root

From decorating cakes to adding ground into soups and stews, Angelica root (Angelica archangelica) offers plenty of culinary applications. It’s also one of the star ingredients for distilling gin, aside from the quintessential juniper berry. With an earthy, vegetal flavour, Angelica root makes the ideal herbal addition for a hearty vegetable broth or soup.
