Description

The Chaste Tree, is a deciduous shrub or small tree that is native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Asia. The Chaste Tree typically grows to a height of 10-20 feet (3-6 metres) and can spread to a similar width. The leaves are palmate, composed of five to seven leaflets that resemble the fingers of a hand. They are aromatic and have a greyish-green colour.

The chaste tree produces fragrant, lavender, purple, or sometimes white flowers in spiked clusters from late spring to early autumn. The tree bears small, dark brown to black berries that are referred to as “chaste berries” or “monk’s pepper.” It is these which are dried and finely ground to produce the Chaste Tree Berry Powder. They have a spicy, peppery aroma and taste and are part of the Laminaceae family.

The Chaste Tree contains several active compounds, including flavonoids, iridoids, and essential oils. The primary active constituents are believed to be: Agnuside and Casticin.

With a history dating back to the Middle Ages, Chasteberry has been revered for its ability to promote hormone balance in both male and female equines, making it a trusted ally in stabilizing hormone-related issues and ensuring a more tranquil and balanced disposition in your horse.

The Chaste Tree has a long history of use in traditional herbal remedies, particularly in ancient Greek and Roman cultures. It was believed to promote chastity, hence the name “chaste tree.” Monks in the Middle Ages reportedly used it to suppress sexual desire, which is why it is also known as “monk’s pepper.” The Chaste Tree Berry is thought to help with regulation of hormones, infections and inflammation.
