Lemon verbena was brought to Europe by the Spanish and the Portuguese in the 17th century and cultivated for its oil. It also doesn’t loose it’s scent during drying or flavour during cooking.

Lemon Verbena (Aloysia Triphylla) is commonly used by Europeans to flavor fruit-based drinks, fruit salad dressings, fish soups, marinades, puddings, jams, and desserts. It pairs well with fruits, vanilla, and seafood dishes and can be used in place of lemon zest in recipes.

Aloysia triphyll contains a strong lemon-scented essential oil that has calming and digestive qualities. The plant has a gentle sedative action and a reputation for soothing abdominal discomfort. It has a mildly tonic effect upon the nervous system and helps to lift the spirits and counter depression. A tea made from the leaves has a deliciously refreshing lemon flavour and is used mainly in treating digestive disorders such as flatulence, indigestion and acidity. In Mexico it is traditionally utilized for the treatment of menstrual colic (primary dysmenorrhea). Citral is the main chemical component found in Aloysia triphylla leaves extract.

Because Lemon Verbena leaves keep their scent well when dried they were a popular with the Victorians as an ingredient in their endless making of potpourri.
