Description

A rose is a woody perennial flowering plant of the genus Rosa. There are over three hundred species and tens of thousands of cultivars. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing, or trailing, with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwestern Africa. Roses have acquired cultural significance in many societies.

The humble rose has a long and illustrious history. During Roman times they were grown extensively and used as confetti for celebrations; in perfumes; and for medicinal purposes, while at one point in the 17th century they were so sought-after that royalty used them as legal tender. Commonly associated with love and romance, red rose petals are highly prized for both their floral fragrance and their ability to add decorative qualities to handmade cosmetics and skincare.

Both Ayurveda and Chinese medicine use rose tea, and have been doing so for hundreds of years. It is thought to have many benefits including relieving menstrual cramping, aiding digestive health, boosting immunity and soothing a sore throat. Its natural diuretic properties make it useful for treating urinary tract infections and thanks to the high levels of antioxidants and vitamin C it has a positive impact on the appearance of the skin and hair.

Dried red rose buds or petals are widely used to add a beautiful decorative touch to hand made soaps. As well as adding their vivid hue to products, rose petals are also said to be an excellent skin soother. They can also be blended with other botanical ingredients to create scented pillows and sachets or potpourri.
