History and background
Peppermint has a long and illustrious history in herbal medicine that dates back thousands of years. Alongside other mint varieties, peppermint was used extensively in ancient Chinese, Japanese and Egyptian medicine. Its usage dates back to at least 1200 B.C., making it one of the oldest known plants to be cultivated specifically for medicinal purposes.
The oldest pieces of mint were unearthed in ancient Egyptian graves in Abd-el-Quarnah, although the history of the species wasn’t properly documented until the late 17th century. A British physician by the name of Dr. Eaton was the first to write about peppermint, and it was introduced as a medicinal plant in central Europe shortly after.
How to use peppermint leaves
Peppermint has many culinary and therapeutic uses and was cultivated by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Since then, it’s remained a regular fixture of our everyday lives. Not only is it used widely as a flavouring agent and fragrance in everything from chewing gum to shower gel, it remains a popular medicinal herb.
Peppermint has long been used to treat such ailments as irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion, headaches and more. When applied to the skin, it can also be used to relieve pain and provide a cooling effect, helping soothe rashes and itches.
