Description

Verbascum is a genus of about 360 species of flowering plants, common name mullein , in the figwort family Scrophulariaceae. They are native to Europe and Asia, with the highest species diversity in the Mediterranean.
Mullein or “mullein leaf” often refers to the leaves of Verbascum thapsus, the great or common mullein, which is frequently used in herbal medicine.

Mullein boasts an illustrious history as a favored herbal remedy and, consequently, has found use in various disorders. Its traditional uses generally have focused on the management of respiratory disorders where it was used to treat asthma, coughs, tuberculosis, and related respiratory problems.

In the 19th century, mullein became a popular remedy for tuberculosis in Europe and the United States. Mullein tea is said to be an effective natural remedy for upper respiratory problems, such as dry cough, tonsillitis, sore throat and hoarseness. Mullein leaves can help get rid of mucus and soothe inflammation in the throat, thanks to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Mullein oil is a powerful disinfectant.
