Description

Comfrey is the informal name for 26 or 27 species and established hybrids in Genus Symphytum, a member of the Borage Family (Family Boraginaceae). Symphytum officinale (Common Comfrey) is a coarse, spreading perennial forming a clump of long, elliptic, dark green leaves, 25 cm long. It is native to the British Isles and other regions of Europe. It typically reaches a height of over one metre. It’s flowers are range from cream, pink to purple.

The root system of the comfrey plant can be as deep as two meters. The plant stores it’s energy in the roots during the autumn/winter months – which makes this time the best for harvesting roots.
