A Deep Dive: Introduction to Green Cardamom

What is cardamom?

Cardamom is a spice made of seed pods from the cardamom plant. It is native to South India and is spindle-shaped with a triangular cross-section. It can be used in a variety of ways, for example, sometimes it can be ground or whole to serve different purposes.

There are various types of cardamom, with the most common type being green cardamom, which comes from the same family as turmeric and ginger.

What is it used for?

Cardamom can be used in a variety of ways and is very essential in many different areas. Some uses include:

  • Used as a spice for sweet and savoury dishes
  • Used as a health supplement as it helps digestion and reduces nausea
  • Boosts flavour of liqueurs and coffee
  • Added to herbal tea to enhance spice and flavour

What are the health benefits?

Cardamom is thought to be beneficial in many ways;

  • Balances blood sugar levels
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Improves heart health
  • Helps treat bronchitis
  • Enhances circulation
  • Alleviates gastrointestinal discomfort during pregnancy

What is green cardamom?

There are two main types of cardamom, those being black and green cardamom.

Green cardamom is the most commonly found in variety in supermarkets. It is mainly used in sweet dishes and can be used whole or ground. White cardamom is a bleached version of green cardamom and has a milder flavour. It is grown in more tropical areas such as India and Malaysia.

Can you eat green cardamom pods?

Cardamom has a peppery yet sweet flavour. The taste is slightly floral with hints of lemon seeping through. Its pungent flavour allows it to be the versatile spice it is today.

Can I use black cardamom instead of green?

Black cardamom attains more of a smoky flavour and has bigger pods which are dark brown. This variety is more appropriate for savoury dishes but is also used in sweet dishes in parts of Asia.

Choosing which cardamom pods to use or cook with depends on the type of dish you are looking to make. Green cardamom pods are most commonly used in spice mixtures such as garam masala. They are also used frequently to give drinks such as mulled wine and hot cider, a boosted flavour.
