Dried Kola Nut
Cola sp.
What are kola nuts used for?
Kola nuts are healthy, high in caffeine, and often used as a herbal supplement and natural food flavouring. In West Africa, it’s not uncommon for people to chew kola nuts to get an intake of caffeine, instead of drinking tea or coffee.
Information
The kola nut, sometimes also called the cola nut, is a type of edible nut the size of a chestnut that comes from the kola tree, which is native to West Africa. These trees can grow up to 60 feet tall and are notable for their vibrant yellow flowers and star-shaped fruits, each of which contains two to five kola nuts.

FAQs
Yes, dried kola nuts contain around 2-3% caffeine. In fact, each individual kola nut contains more caffeine than a cup of coffee!
In small amounts, kola nuts may be safe to eat when pregnant, however, due to the high caffeine content, this ingredient should be restricted in your diet. Pregnant women should avoid consuming more than 300 mg. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you should follow your doctor’s recommendations on caffeine consumption.
One benefit of kola nuts are its stimulant properties (thanks to its natural caffeine content) that activates the central nervous system and increases your heart rate and breathing. The benefit is that you get an energy boost and increased mental alertness.
The kola nut taste is initially very bitter, but it becomes sweeter when chewed. Dried kola nuts have a much more mild flavour and nutmeg-like aroma.
