All you need to know about coriander seeds

The coriander plant’s leafy top is a staple in international cuisines, but did you know that its dried seeds also pack a punch when it comes to flavour and deliver incredible health benefits too?

Are coriander seeds edible?

Having been used in Asian, Middle-Eastern, and Mediterranean cultures since around 5,000BC, these mighty seeds are even mentioned in the bible (Exodus 16:31) and are commonly used to add an aromatic and slightly-citrus flavour to dishes such as curries, soups, and chutneys. So yes, coriander seeds are edible and they will take your dishes to the next level.

Are coriander seeds good for you?

These impressive seeds not only promise to enhance your next dish of choice, it’s said they offer remarkable health benefits too, including:

  • Lowered risk of heart disease, as they act as a diuretic and helps flush extra sodium through your system whilst potentially reducing your ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol, a common cause of heart attacks.
  • Lowered inflammation due to their powerful antioxidant properties.
  • Reduced blood sugar levels as they promote enzyme activity that helps remove sugar from the blood.

In addition, coriander seeds are crammed with vital vitamins and minerals, such as iron and vitamins K and C, contributing to healthy bones and blood.

Can I substitute ground coriander for coriander seeds?

Yes, it is sometimes possible to substitute ground coriander for coriander seeds, but – be warned – you’ll need to adjust your weights and measurements as a direct exchange would be detrimental to your dish.

When you only have ground coriander available and your recipe calls for coriander seeds, we recommend you use three quarters of a tsp of ground coriander for each 1tsp of coriander seeds.

How long do coriander seeds last?

Coriander seeds can last several months, and even years if stored correctly. Store yours in an airtight container in a cool, dry place to keep them fresh for as long as possible.
